Common Central Oregon Tree Pest: Sequoia Pitch MothCentral Oregon Tree Pest - Sequoia Pitch Moth - Arbor 1 Tree Service

Do you have pine trees on your property that have large, unsightly masses of pitch on the trunk? If so, you may have a problem with the Sequoia Pitch Moth, a sometimes common Central Oregon tree pest.

The Sequoia Pitch Moth typically attacks ponderosa pine, shore pine, sugar pine, other ornamental pine trees and rarely, douglas firs. They don’t usually cause damage in large trees, but smaller trees may suffer more from the wounds resulting in them being more susceptible to wind breakage. Pitch wounds on the lower trunks can also pose a fire hazard as they are easily ignited by ground fire.

There are methods to help prevent Pitch Moth such as pruning at proper times but overall, like we always say – good tree health is critical in warding off pests and diseases. Proper placement of trees with appropriate watering and nutrients are the best defense against common pests and diseases.
